Burgers, Fireworks and a Safe Fourth of July!

There’s nothing better than watching a fireworks show after a day of grilling out and hanging out with friends and family by the pool. Whether you sit on your porch to watch the fireworks or drive to the nation’s capital, put safety in play if fireworks are part of your Fourth of July celebration.

If you choose to use fireworks, make sure they’re legal in your area before buying or using them and take the necessary precautions. First, don’t let children play with fireworks.

Did you know that a sparkler burns at temperatures reaching 2,000 degrees?! Sparklers are a common cause of firework injuries because clothes often catch on fire. It's sad to say, but even sparklers shouldn’t be used by kids under the age of 12.

When lighting the fuse, never have any portion of your body directly over a fireworks device. Move back to a safe distance immediately after lighting.

Have water on hand in case a fire or other mishap occurs. Finally, don’t reignite a "dud", instead let it sit for 20 minutes then put it into a bucket of water.

Happy Fourth!

Time to Travel on a Plane

Summer is here and school is almost out! Keeping your kids safe is a big job, especially in the summer, between spending time outdoors, family trips, pool parties, and time to play with friends!

Whether in a car, at the pool or the lake, at grandma and grandpa's house, at a hotel, on a plane, at the playground with friends or riding a bike, Safe Start Baby will give you the information you need to make sure your little one is safe.

This week, we're focusing on travel safety on a plane.

  • If your child rides in a car seat on the ground, he or she should ride in that car seat on a plane. Make sure your child’s car seat is labeled "certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft."

  • When buying the ticket for your child's seat, keep in mind that car seats aren't allowed in exit rows and need to be installed at a window seat. (Good news: Did you know most airlines offer a discount for children under the age of 2?)

  • Kids who have outgrown car seats should sit directly on the airplane seat and, like all passengers. Make sure they keep the lap belt buckled across their thighs or hips.
One more thing, booster seats aren't allowed on planes, because they need shoulder belts and airplane seats have lap belts only.

Hope you find these tips helpful!
