Favorite Baby Proofing Products

In honor of National Safety Month and Home Safety Month, we here at Safe Start Baby thought we’d take this opportunity to share some of our favorite babyproofing products with our readers and customers.

For my husband and me the rooms that presented the greatest challenge were the kitchen and the family room. The kitchen and family rooms are natural gathering places for our family and as soon as our first child became mobile our once oasis turned into a potential nightmare full of dangers lurking around every corner. Luckily, with a few strategic purchases, we were able to make our kitchen safe for toddlers while keeping inconveniences to adults to a minimum.

Stove Guard

I do not know what I would do without my stove guard! It keeps curious little fingers from reaching the burners and prevents accidents caused by pulling pans off the stovetop. This simple item alleviated a huge source of concern for us in our kitchen and allows us to turn our back on the stove without worry.

Kids Edge Hearth Guard

Our second greatest baby proofing challenge was finding a way to baby-proof our hulking fireplace with its hard rock surface and sharp edges. At first we tried draping blankets over the top to create a cushion around the edges, but our baby soon figured out how to pull these down, not to mention the fact it was an sore. At a friend’s suggestion we finally broke down and bought a Kids Edge Hearth Guard and I could not be more pleased with the product. The cushion properly protects toddlers from hard edges while maintaining a minimal profile—we don’t even notice ours is there.

Tubbly Bubbly

While some babyproofing challenges were obvious (e.g. electrical outlets, cupboards, etc.), what surprised us as new parents were the potential dangers we hadn’t even considered! It didn’t occur to either my husband or I that the hot tub facet with its sharp edges could present such a danger until we had a potential near disaster one evening during bath time. We quickly discovered Safe Start Baby’s Tubbly-Bubbly, a soft vinyl animal head that fits snugly onto any standard bathtub faucet to help protect baby from the faucet's sharp edges which can also be hot to the touch.

These are just a few of the babyproofing products that we love in my household. If you have any products you can’t live without we’d love to hear from you in our comments section. What items have you discovered that save your sanity while keeping your home toddler proof?

Hi Michele,

Just sort of stumbled onto this blog. My wife and I just went through this. You've got a lot of interesting ideas in here and I plan on forwarding this blog to her. I think the tub spout cover is a good idea the way their little heads whip around. Check out my blog about our experience: http://simplemanssurvivalguide.blogspot.com/2011/06/baby-safety-weekend.html

Best,

Travis
