Parents often don’t realize just how much stuff their mobile baby will get into until they see it happening right in front of them… that desk you never thought she’d crawl under, those outlets you never thought he’d notice. And it’s in these moments that you may discover how grossly unprepared you are for a curious, fearless, daredevil of a baby.
Make your inquisitive toddler’s world a safer place by baby proofing your home in the following areas:
Go on lockdown. All lower cabinets and drawers in your kitchen and bathrooms should be locked with babyproofing latches. Designate one cabinet for cleaning products and opt for a magnetic child proof lock for double insurance. Don’t worry – your child will still have fun making some beautiful music by tugging with all their might on the knobs.
Step carefully. Install a baby gate at both the top and bottom of your stairs, and be sure to use hardware-mounted baby gates. Pressure-mounted child proof gates are suitable for doorways – but don’t even try them for any staircases, no matter the number of stairs.
Cut corners. Coffee tables, end tables, fireplace hearths, TV stands, desks – make sure any furniture with sharp edges is padded.
Secure the flat-screen. Anchor your television to the TV stand or hang a flat-screen on the wall to avoid a tipping hazard. However, we can’t promise your child won’t hurl a toy or two at the screen!
Be window wise. Two items of note when it comes to child proofing windows: First, use window guards or child safety locks for windows to prevent them from being opened too far and thus reducing the chance of any falls. Second, use cordless blinds or shorten the length of the cords and tie them up with a cord cleat so they don’t dangle invitingly.
Get furniture in tip-top shape. Mobile babies use furniture to help themselves stand up. Older babies love to climb and use whatever surface they need to get their hands on a high, out-of-reach item. Avoid tipping hazards – some of the most dangerous and preventable baby injuries – by securing your furniture to the wall.
Slide into safety. Outlet plugs are convenient, but they’re a choking hazard. Use slide-plate covers on all of your outlets, and use power strip covers and wire covers to block tiny fingers from exploring.
When in doubt, baby proof it. You won’t be sorry.
